How To Not Grind Your Teeth While Sleeping

During my half-yearly dental checkups, my dentist said that I have been grinding my teeth during the night and she suggested that I should wear a night guard. If I keep grinding my teeth, the end result will be shorter tooth as the year goes by.   Seems like I do not have a choice. :-(

Introduction

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, most often occurs at night. Although it is often linked to stress, bruxism can be caused by sleep disorders or by mechanical problems with the teeth, such as missing or broking teeth or a misaligned bite.

These are ways which I had found that could help my teeth grinding problem which I think I will give it a try.

1) Avoid or cut back on foods and drinks that contain caffeine, such as colas, chocolate, and coffee.

- Love my daily coffee but will try to cut down by a cup.

2) Add calcium and magnesium supplements to your diet. Calcium and magnesium are necessary for muscle function and nervous system health. If you don't have enough, you can have problems with clenching, tension, and other muscle problems.

- Did not try out taking calcium but instead consume 500 mg of Vitamin C daily.  Seems like the vitamin C is helping my gums to improve and also reduce my teeth grinding.  Well, every little progress helps.
3) If your bruxism is stress related, it's important that you try to relax and get a good night's sleep. There are a number of things you can do to help you wind down before you go to bed. These include:

- yoga
- deep breathing
- massage
- reading
- having a bath
- listening to music

4) Practice good sleep habits. Getting a good night's sleep, which may include treatment for sleep problems, may help reduce bruxism.

- Trying to do some light yoga before going to bed. Yoga had been well-known to help us relax.  There are many good yoga tips found in YouTube.

5) Wear a night guard or often known Mouth Guard. Your dentist can make a plastic or acrylic appliance for you to wear at night. Although it may not stop you from grinding, it will redistribute the forces from grinding and protect your teeth from damage. Your dentist will want to see you regularly to check for any tooth movement or cavities that might result from wearing such an appliance. Keep in mind, however, that in order for the night guard to do any good, you must remember to put it in.

- Had not decided yet, but will be my last choice as I hate putting something in my mouth during my bed time.
